Encaustic is one of the oldest forms of painting, with paint made from pure pigment mixed with beeswax and resin. The mixture is applied hot, and then reheated to fuse the layers together. It's one of the most forgiving mediums available, allowing you to "undo" virtually anything, giving you the freedom to be fearless and let your creativity flow.
We will cover the basics, including information about how to make paint. We’ll also learn about commercial paints and their applications, supports, grounds and techniques: paint application, fusing, glazing, inscribing and mixed media approaches, safety, materials, demos of applying paint, glazing. How to get that smooth surface! We will also introduce mixed media, working with oil bar, pigment, creating lines and texture and image transfer. We will emphasize how these techniques can be developed to create a unique encaustic language for each student. We will talk (and demo) how to create glaze layers, as well as some special techniques like inscribing and using dry pigment. Participants will leave with printouts containing pertinent information as well as a list of suppliers.
What to bring:
• comfortable shoes and clothing you aren’t afraid to get waxed
• bag lunch and any additional personal snacks (the Studio will provide coffee, tea, water and some sort of baked item)
